Meet George Holland

Meet George Holland, Rutherford's first Chief of Police

"The Rutherford Police Department started in 1898, when the borough council authorized the purchase of uniforms and a bicycle for day patrolling. The first chief was George Holland (1898-1911). His staff was one sergeant and five patrolmen. At that time, a town ordinance gave the following charge to this department: 'It shall be the duty of said Policemen to drive, take to and impound all swines, horses, goats, sheep and meat cattle running at large within the limits of the Borough.' Their duties have greatly expanded since those days."
