In May 1924, Rutherford National Bank moved to a new $300,000 building at Park and Ames Avenues, transferring assets from the old Park and Glen Road site with police escort. Construction began two years earlier on the site of the old Vreeland Building, an historic grocery store near Station Square. The new building measured 44 by 102 feet, 40 feet tall, with over 100 steel-reinforced concrete piers due to quicksand. Built of lime and sandstone, the interior featured marble and bronze, with four large exterior columns. The old building was sold to Rutherford Mutual Building and Loan Association.
In November 1926, Rutherford National Bank and Bergen County Bank agreed to merge under the Rutherford National name, doubling capital and adding $200,000 surplus effective January 1, 1927. Founded in 1895, Rutherford National was Bergen County’s second oldest bank.
