Early American modernist artist born in Rutherford, New Jersey, on December 23, 1870. In 1936, he had a major show at the Museum of Modern Art and later became a well-known American painter. In 1950, the University of Maine and Yale University gave him honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees.
