During the Civil War, Lafayette, a former slave, helped wounded Union Captain Alfonzo L. Mabbett, who brought him to Rochester, where Mabbett’s family worked in the Underground Railroad. Lafayette and Harriet married in 1867 at Rochester’s African American Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1972, they built an Italianate home on Donaldson Avenue, raising their seven children. Lafayette was a coachman and member of Rutherford’s Lincoln League; Harriet was a seamstress. Can you identify the family name?
